HOLA!

Can it possibly be that almost a year has passed since Daisy Cooks! aired nationwide, and the companion book, “Daisy Cooks! Latin Flavors That Will Rock Your World”, hit the shelves? I can hardly believe it myself, but it really rings true whenever I get the opportunity to answer your emails, or chat with you at book signings or demos, or even when I bump into you in the supermarket or airport!

It has truly been an exhilarating ride, and it just keeps getting better. I have had the opportunity to meet many of you while I was on the book tour, or doing demos all over the United States. I have marveled at your stories, great sense of humor, and excitement to share your own personal recipes, and I am very grateful for the experience.

As elating as this year has been, it has not been without some sadness. In January of this year, my Abuela, Valentina Martinez Perez, quietly passed from us. She was 99 years old, and left a wonderful legacy rich in memories and love. While she is sorely missed, I am ever appreciative to her for teaching me love and nurture of family and friends through food. Abuela was and continues to be a heroine in my life. Her light continues to shines bright.

I am busy getting new batch of recipes together! The excitement continues, and I look forward to continue to share it with you all. Thank you for all of your support, and for embracing Daisy Cooks! as warmly as you all have.

I don't know how this dessert got its name, and to be honest, I think I'd rather keep it that way, but this cake will be found in any and every Latin pastry shop, and in various flavors. This is my riff on that theme, playing around with another classic combination in the Latin kitchen: guava paste and queso fresco, a slightly tart cheese eaten fresh. In this filling, the guava takes the form of store-bought jelly and cream cheese lightened with whipped cream stands in for the queso fresco.I like it because it's simple, light, and the fillings are very refreshing. I can't tell you how proud I was the day I first served Abuela a piece of Brazo that I had baked myself. The fact that she did not bake, and that it was her favorite dessert (next to cheesecake!) added to my pleasure.
